NY Times readers choose Penang as No 2 must-visit destination

NY Times readers choose Penang as No 2 must-visit destination for 2009

Readers of The New York Times have chosen Penang as the second best destination among “44 Places To Go in 2009”.

In top spot in the recommendations found on the paper’s website (http://www.nytimes.com) was Beirut.

The only other South-East Asian destination in the ranking is Phuket, which is in 15th place.
Tuck shop: A group of foreigners enjoying dim sum and noodles at an outdoor cafe in Penang.

Other places include Washington (fourth), Rome (fifth) and Metz in France (sixth). The newspaper ranked Penang in the 22nd spot while Phuket was placed 12th.

Besides the second spot in the overall readers’ ranking, Penang is also in the top 12 places in the frugal and food categories (both readers’ and the paper’s recommendations).

The New York Times said adventurous foodies are now turning to Penang, the culinary capital of Malaysia, where they are eating their way through one of South-East Asia’s liveliest street-food scenes.

It said there are city-run hawker stands everywhere and even refined dishes like char koay teow rarely cost more than US$2 (about RM7.20)


“The ranking is a boost for the state as a tourist destination.

“Penang food is so famous that I know of Singaporeans who fly here just to eat,” he said.

ST. ANNE HAEMODIALYSIS CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

The organisation is officially known as “Pusat Haemodialisis St Anne, Bukit Mertajam”.

It is set up by the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) of Church of St Anne on 3 March 2002 under the patronage of His Excellency, Rt. Rev. Antony Selvanayagam, DD, the Bishop of Penang.

The Centre started its operation on 9 August 2002 and is affiliated to the Malaysian Catholic Welfare Services since 26 August 2002 .

The Bishop of Penang officially opened and blessed the Centre on 9 February 2003 .

OBJECTIVES

To promote goodwill and community spirit through social and welfare services of the church. MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to all over 18 years of age, residing in Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang , Malaysia . - Membership fee is RM10.00 per month. - Registration fee is RM10.00 - Group Insurance (P.A.) will be available to members when the membership is over 500.

GENERAL

Being charity-oriented, Pusat Haemodialisis St Anne depends solely on donations. Therefore, campaigns for donations are on-going throughout the year. There are members and non-members who pledge to donate a fixed sum monthly or yearly. Up to date, the Centre has 6 dialysis machines. There is sufficient space for 12 dialysis machines. All donations are welcome. All well-wishers who wish to contribute can : Drop the donations at the Centre, or Send the donations to the Centre at the above stated address, or Call the Centre to arrange the handover of the donations.
